Here's the situation---I have a Toshiba Satellite 2515CDS laptop that needs to be linked to my offices network. The network runs off of a Compaq Presario 4824.

Our office is small so we have a 3com 8 port hub that we use to link all the other computers in the office to this Compaq (for files, folders, email and the internet). The compaq uses a regular modem dial up connection to get the internet.

I bought a Linksys PCMPC 100 (version 3) for the network card for the laptop. Loaded it on and I see everybody elses computer and I can get files but I can't get onto the internet or email---everybody elses computer can. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have tried configuring and what not but it still doesn't work. Does anybody have any ideas---we have no network administrator.

If the Compaq is your access to the internet I assume you are running a proxy server software. What you need to do in your browser is....

1. Open the browser.
2. Click on Tools, then Internet Options.
3. Click on the Connections tab.
4. Then click on Lan Settings.
5. Under Proxy Server, check the box for "Use Proxy Server"
6. Enter in the IP Address of the Proxy Server and the Port number
7. Click on OK and then attempt to browse the internet.

Of course the above proceedures only work with Internet Explorer 5x. If you are running something else you will need to set up the proxy.

Now if you are not running a proxy you have something else that is a problem.....

I just tried this and I've tried many times prior and this doesn't work either.

I am starting to get frustrated with this whole thing

Have you looked at the other configurations in your office to see if they are set-up with a proxy? If they are not running a proxy take a look at your TCP/IP protocol stack and ensure it is setup correctly. You may need to setup DNS manually to ensure you can resolve hostnames to IP Addresses.

just a thought...

depending on the proxy server software your company
is using, you might need to install something in your
computer (i.e. proxy-x from and you
also need to comfigure your tcp/ip - check the ip add,
subnet mass, and the gateway.
