I was trying to up grade to IE6 on a friends computer. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop running WIN98.

I DL'd the setup file and started the process, during the installation it froze up, I let it set for about 20min and still nothing. I turned the computer off and was going to try the installation again...BUT windows started to boot, her background picture came up but then nothing after that, no icons, toolbars, nothing. I hit control, ALT, delete and the only thing in there was explorer. I tried to shut that down with no help.

I have reinstalled Windows over top of the previous version from the "Dell Recovery Disk." I went through the whole process of "Starting Windows for the first time", then it started the reboot. Now it comes up to the same point to where it loads a default background and freezes, Explorer still comes up in the close program dialog box. I dont know what to do at this point.

Is there a way to go back to the previous version of IE without loading windows completely? Is there a way to delete IE6 so windows will load? Or what is your suggestion at this point.

2 things to try first:

Start computer and tap F8 until you are prompted with some options. Choose safe mode, then see if Windows will respond properly. If that doesn't work try:

Re-Start with Startup disk in then choose mininal boot, then type C:\ at the prompt then type CD\ then type SCANREG /RESTORE and choose a restore point the day before you tried to install IE-6. Do this step quickly before it's too late. SCANREG only saves 5 days I think.

If that doesn't work, then download this ie6setup file, that I used, it works, i've installed twice now with it.
choose save to disk with that file. Put it on a floppy, then start the bad computer with start-up disk in choose minimal boot again, then when at the prompt, remove the disk, and put in the disk with the .exe you downloaded from my site, type A:\ to get to the floppy drive, then type the following command to copy the file to the hard-drive:
XCOPY IE6SETUP.EXE C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP
make sure you put the appropriate spaces in.

Then start the computer regularly, and when it has started push Windows key on keyboard + R to get the Run command dialog box (I'm hoping it will show up, but it might not), if it does, type: C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\IE6SETUP.EXE, and let the installer run, and hopefully all should be fixed.

If the run dialog box doesn't appear, then you will have to re-install Windows, including formating the Hard-Drive. The same thing happened to me when I un-installed MSIE-6.0.

Hope this helps!

PS- If you do need to re-install windows and format the hard-drive follow my instructions here: FAQ748-1599.

PPS- You may want to contact Dell Technical Support:
1-800-847-4096 have your Service Tag #, and Express Service Code ready, and at the phone prompt choose Hardware difficulties, not software, otherwise they will make you pay for support.

Good Luck!!! [deejay]
