Help, getting weird errors in Quark

Question: I have Quark 5 and trying to save my work on PDF. However, I'm receiving a msg. that reads. "Acrobat Distiller Printer description is not installed. A generic PPD will be use instead. I also receive: To save a doc. as a PDF, the current printer must be a laserwriter or version 7 or greater.

I have a Mac OSx.

I have never received any problems PDF-ing in other applications but can't understand why Quark is giving me trouble. Can anybody help? Thanks.

Quark 5 cannot make PDFs on its own. Because it runs in classic mode, the built in OS X PDF printer doesn't work with it.

To make a PDF, Quark 5 creates a PostScript file, then it passes this file on to Distiller (or similar) to create a PDF. Unfortunately, it doesn't create them on its own, so if you don't have Distiller, you're out of luck. You could try Google for free PDF creators, although I've never tried any of them myself.

Assuming you have Distiller, the messages you're receiving are basically saying that Quark can't find a means of creating the PostScript file. With Quark open, go to the Apple menu, and open "Chooser". See if you have a PostScript printer available, such as AdobePS or LaserWriter. If so, select it and go back to Quark. If not, you'll have to install one.

Download the postscript driver, then download a PPD file if necessary (they're further down the list). When they're installed, you should be able to get past those error messages. However, if you don't have Distiller, you won't get much further...
