Our Server froze and required that the power button be held down to power off and reboot. It appears to have corrupted Mircosoft Exchange 2003. The MSExhange Information Store service will NOT start. Which consequently means other services won't start so although the server is accepting mail, no one can download their mail through web or Outlook. The required dependent service for Info Store is already started (I forget which one it is). What appears not to be loading properly (just my guess) is the ExIFS kernel that is required to run Info Store Service. It appears that possibly the publiclog file in MDBDATA is corrupt, but I'm not sure since I tried to restore those and it didn't help. (I re-restored them back to the current state to minimize the variables changed.)

Any guidance would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

Start with checking the Eventlogs, there will be errors in there as well as Event ID, post those, otherwise we would be guessing.

Here are a few of the logs:
Source: ESE Category: Logging/Recovery EventID: 477
Information Store (2544) First Storage Group: The log range read from the file "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\E00.log" at offset 1260032 (0x0000000000133a00) for 134656 (0x00020e00) bytes failed verification due to a range checksum mismatch. The expected checksum was 1107044756 (0x41fc2994) and the actual checksum was 1656345542 (0x62b9d3c6). The read operation will fail with error -501 (0xfffffe0b). If this condition persists then please restore the logfile from a previous backup.

Category: ESE EventID: 465
Information Store (2544) First Storage Group: Corruption was detected during soft recovery in logfile C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\E00.log. The failing checksum record is located at position 2461:194. Data not matching the log-file fill pattern first appeared in sector 2724. This logfile has been damaged and is unusable.

Category: Restore/Failed EventID: 454
Information Store (2544) First Storage Group: Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -501.

Category: MSExchangeIS Error Code 9518
Information Store (2544) First Storage Group: Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -501.

Thank you, but I had tried backing up the log file (and removing any log newer) as the MS recommended for the error I received and that didn't help.
My ESEutil will not run so a hard repair even though a last resort is not an option at this time. The ESEutil opens but the minute any key is hit; it closes.

The MS recommendation is to use an OLDER good backup log, not create a new backup log! Is that not what you did wrong?

I meant that I restored the files from an old backup prior to the problem...

Ok
There is not much more we can do from here since we are not in front of it.
