Well, we have a Dell PE2400 running Win2k Server, and the event logs show that the DNS server is continuously forwarding packets to itself. (local net ip 192.168.0.1)

strangely enough the time that these errors started showing up in the logs was just after a problem where the server dynamically reconfigured it's IP address continuously, I had to manually configure a static IP address for the NIC to stop it from assuming 127.0.etc, and going out of the network range. (wonder why that was)

ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!

Well, for one thing, it doesn't surprise me if it was on a Dell server (just kidding). :)

By default, the DNS entries on a server running W2k is 127.0.0.1 ... If it is running Active Directory, then it by all means should be pointing to itself, as that is how it resolves requests for AD objects. If you have an internet connection on your network, you should ensure that the "." forward lookup zone is deleted, and enable forwarding in DNS with your ISP DNS servers.

Your own properties should be your own internal NIC's ip address, and nothing else (unless you have more dc's). Forwarding will take card of the internet resolutions for the system and your network, provided you have all your other systems pointing to your Dell server.

Hope this answers your q.

Absolutely brilliant, thanks because that helps clarify things somewhat, but how can I forward DNS server requests to our ISP's dns servers, when I havn't got an 'always on' link to them....

This problem will be solved within a month by the way, as we are having optical lines installed, and I'll try it out but there you go..........

If you set up your ISP's Connection to persistent or demand-dial through NAT, it will connect on demand (unless it is costing you money to be connected, I would recommend it). There should be a setting in NAT for demand-dial connections to connect for resolving DNS queries. In any case, if it is set like this already, it would enable your network to access the internet when they wish. Out of pure curiosity, what are your experiences with Dell support on these types of issues? How about hardware?

Thanks!

Havn't spoken to dell on this sort of thing as the OS isn't their responsibility really, I don't think they'd help much.. But when I did speak to them (trying to get NT4 & 2K installed) they were very helpful, (out of 3 companies they were the first to offer me help without asking for a credit card first - pah microsoft) an I thought the whole process was painless, lastly I reckon their website was excellent, they told me what I needed and their website coughed all the drivers up within 5 mins of searching.

Cheers for the answers.... I'm goin to try it out now.
