I work for a school and our file and email server is down. it runs 2003 server. the domain controller is running fine. it get's hung up when i try to log in and nothing happens, it stays at the blue screen. it gets stuck at the "applying personal settings" popup.

is there a way to start in safe mode if i cant get into windows at all? i just need to get into it to see what is wrong.

what's really odd is that once it got hung up. it's ip change from 10.1.1.11 to 10.1.2.3. i know i did not make that change.

any help or tips would be appreciated, thanks.

Is the IP static or Dynamic? If dynamic would recommend that you use static addresses for your servers.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Are you running the server connected to a UPS? I remember reading somewhere (probably on here) that the symptoms you are experiencing are as a result of a Powerchute software upgrade going wrong. If memory serves, the fix is to boot up in Safe Mode, disable the Powerchute service, then reboot normally. I don't know if this applies to you though...

thelad, thanks for the lead, looks like this has got to be the problem. i'll go forward with this till exhausted. i did look at disabling APEBE, the service for UPS's but did not find it in SERVICES.

Oh yeah, i am on a UPS, brand is APC Smart-UPS 2200. also, on the subject of UPS, Do i need to install the software for the UPS to manage it correctly? because i have not.

as before, i didnt see any UPS services running so i cant disable any. read the microsoft thing on disabling the APC Powerchute SERVER and AGENT,

It also didnt help by installing the latest version of powerchute and managing my UPS.

Also pulled my Server off the UPS and plugged it straight to the wall, that didnt do anything also

i'm stuck, other than having to wipe everything out and starting new again. I am also pondering the thought that it might be my active directory too, my admin account is very slow logging in now.

APC Smart-UPS 2200 was not the unit that was causing the problems. We have a W2K3 server and W2K3 TS connected to it with no problems.

Yes, to get full management capability of the UPS you need to install the software.

Cheers.

Pulled our 2 servers off the APC and plugged straight to wall. uninstall all of the APC softwares and disable any UPS services running, reboot, still same problem, hangs at the screen. Cant cant seem to relate this issue to APC, search every engine about APC and this issue.

what i also did was go into MSCONFIG and disable all my startup SERVICES, reboot, i can log in just fine, no problems and no hanging, but nothing is running.
so i guess i have to narrow it down to finding the SERVICE that is hanging me up. Is there another SERVICE that can be hanging me up? I have Varitas BackupExec and Exchange server 2003 on this server, it's also the file and print server too.
