Help Blue screen Death - end of rope! 1

Hello -------- I am brand new to this forum.............

I hate windows xp! I hate microsoft! I hate this brand new computer!


Sorry, If I seem harsh. I wasn't 5 minutes ago when I FIRST wrote this. But the )*&&^%*(&& Computer crashed again. and I had to reboot, etc etc and rewrite this.........................


OKAY JUST HAD TO REBOOT AGAIN......................................

WHAT WAS I EVEN DOING? Just writng in word pad.!!!!!!!!!! ( why wordpad? so i have a way
to save my typing between lines, case of a new crash )

I THINK THIS IS WHAT IM SUPPOSED TO NOTE, CORRECT? ( i just figured out where to find this info from reading the board here ) However, the blue screen info looks different every time.


Anyway I have a long hatred of trying to use computers. I wanted to get into video editing
as a possible career, and have suffered through win 98 problems, / me problems
and now into xp problems

I have had a couple systems - rife with problems. Xp pro installs last literally a couple days, then blue screens of death.
this is on several systems.

I can NEVER get any productive work done. Just fixes, and tries.

Anway I went to Opera browser recently - is that my problem?

IM WRITING THIS ON BRAND NEW LAPTOP - fujitsu, ht 3.2 800 bus, drivers all updated, 80 gig driver. full service pack, right.

WORKED GREAT FOR FIRST 3 months - xp home pre installed.

Then started blue screens. I clean installed over home to Pro.

blue screens getting worse!

TAKE INTO TECH YESTERDAY.

I usually am very frustrated with these people, then can NEVER find the problem.

1. He says probably bad harddrive. ( I can't leave laptop with him, 'cause forgot power cord)

2. I ask him to test ram. Ram tests fine. 1 gig.

3. I tell him I think Norton virus is bad. He sounds like he works for norton - "no there great!" ( friends in my industry tell me NEVER use norton, it conflicts with my editing stuff)

4. go home - i download hard drive tester. hard Disk is fine! ( Ug, that gut feeling another microsoft trained employee is a worth....... dufus...)

5. Today.....System seems better - for what reason?? just testing ram?? Just testing hard drive?

6. get norton off - try other virus apps.

7 today. things SEEM better. 5 crashes an hour down to 1 or 2. Until trying to post to you guys.


Is there anyway for me to get a stable system to do some work ever? Suggestions?

I got all and just ran tests.

1. Microsoft test for 10 min - all OK>

2. memtest 86, for over an hour ( but not
completed)

all okay,

still stumped.

Run the Microsoft test a little longer than 10 minutes. Two hours should do it.

From your first parameter value though it would suggest possibly an issue with your video card drivers. You should go to the video manufacturer and download and apply a newer driver set.

For windows XP, the best way to get an accurate answer as to the cause of a crash is to send the crash report when the machine boots up. When you send the error report to MS, this analysis is done by an automated tool and you should get an answer a few seconds later.

Other things that could play a role (note a 0x50 and a 1x50 are essentially the same error):

. Turn down hardware acceleration on the video properties, Advanced settings, Troubleshoot

I ran the microsoft mem test for over an hour.
All fine.

Was downloading a driver during night, sometime
during night crashed with blue screen.

Here is the blue screen I just got, after surfing fine on Opera for close to an hour.

I turned the video card, from full hardware
accel to lowest. Didnt seem to help. On
3 / 4 now.

I was getting the latest ati radeon driver
from ati site. It is slightly newer than.
driver from fujisu site. But looks like a 4 part download. Do I need all 4 parts again?


Im tempted to go back to the C drive image original factor install. thats where it ran
great for 3 months - with over 100 programs on
it. ( but I was just at that point, 2 days ago
again, before removing norton)

I'd say just download the driver, I asume the other 3 parts are the software packages from ATI for DVD/VI etc.

......Ha, your right. LOL. Apologies to all here. I should have said " the average shopping mall tech". - or at least the ones Ive met.

seriously, you can see how little I know, yet I invariable know more than them.

.......Also - this is the FIRST xp forum I found, and by chance, it happens to be the best / highest quality of tech people. Way above the malls - LOL.

.........thats what I figured. But I downloaded part one - the driver. Tried to install it and IT COMPLAINED that there was no ATI driver installed on the system! ( totally wrong)

Then I thought, maybe its going to the wrong
folder, by default, sent it to the driver folder
( that the fujitsu site drivers go to) but got
the same error. So the older version is still in.

Use of a free utility like the "Belarc Advisor" will tell you exactly what hardware, software, update patches, bios version and a lot more about your system. It is handy to know the exact details in your search for drivers.

You can then also post your full machine specifications here too as that is always helpful.

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.


Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem. Use the Filter option to isolate your "savedump" errors.


If the error occurred after installing a device driver or application, try using Safe Mode and removing the driver or program.

You can also load the Recovery Console and run ChkDsk /r to check for problems. Or you can use ChkDsk to check your drive for errors by right-clicking your Drive icon and using, Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

See if you have any services that are flagging as "Starting" but not actually running.


Some general things to try.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

It seems to me that if you've been experiencing blue-screen type problems with many machines (dating from Win98 - Windows XP), then there is something fundamentally wrong with some of your general-use habits.

Don't take this the wrong way; this is not meant to be a cheap shot at you. In my own experience as a network admin and user support person, I've found a clear difference in the general health of PCs that are used by people that attempt to become skilled users vs. individuals that seem to think that their machine is somehow "out to get them".

Computers are gigantic calculators, that's all. A machine's operating system is the result of thousands of simple files working in tandam to present you with what is hopefully a seamless user experience. It's easy to screw-up one file and have the whole thing come crashing down like a house of cards.

I would call up my local community college and take a couple classes.

that came on it. Doesnt help.

.............I was introduced to computers by a boy friend, college computer major. Talked me into the whole thing. A real pro microsoft / pro computer guy.

Well...the set ups he helped with always had
problems. Not saying hes as good as you guys, but he knew all about drivers, testing memory etc. etc,

........he started to blame it all on lousy
windows 98, terrible ME, etc.

also...he ran NT , NT server, windows 2000
on systems too. Knew his stuff..


.........I was so happy to get xp! I said
isn't this great? - end of so many frustrating problems! well..... Soon he reported xp was problem ridden too. ( he couldnt get work done either. ]

Moral of story ? : Computer man went to
Macintosh. I never heard the end of how now
he had no problems.!!! Rates is FAR far above windows -

I couldnt really afford one. Then he
moved 5 states away. boo hoo.


.....would love to take class. But, cant
really with my daughters. Is there a DVD
i could buy - with all this stuff shown
clearly? that would sure help.

I've used W98, NT, W2000, and Xp pro and the few occasions I've had problems it has been thru not doing clean installs and stuff like that. But I don't download games or anything else unless I know exactly what it is and where it is from.

I did dabble with overclocking for a while and that caused no end of problems. Usually had to use jumpers to reset the bios to factory settings. Nightmare.

I must say that XP Pro is the best Windows system I've used though - if you do a clean install. I tried doing upgrades for a while but gave it up as a bad job - loads of crashes etc.

Just looking down this thread and saw the mention of Belarc.

I've used Belarc on all sorts of Pc's from W98 to xp pro (which [I believe] is the best windows system to date).

I recently built a new system using two Seagate Barracuda 120Gig Sata drives in a Raid0 configuration. Each time I tried to run Belarc on this setup I got killed and subsequently couldn't reboot the system - had to reinstall xp. Does Belarc have a problem with striping?

I have re-read your first post, my guess is that the video editing task is hogging most of your system resources to the point of failure. I have a similar problem when I copy LP Vinyl discs, a single side produces a file of around 250MBs which is fragmented all over the partition on the Hard Disk, before I copy the second side I need to defrag the partition containing the the file from the first side, if I don't do this the system just hangs.

In the light of experience, I make sure that I switch off the firewall, antivirus, and anything else that loads at startup and only allow the recording software to run. This lessens the problem but does not solve it.

At the moment I have taken this a step further, I dual boot two XP OSs, with a seperate 4GB partition for the Pagefile and a 10GB partition for the actual recording and burning files. The first partiton contains all my usual applications, plus firewall and AV programs, the second partition only contains my recording program. After I installed SP2 from the CD I activated windows and then I stopped the Windows firewall and for good measure deleted the dial up connection and turfed out everything I could from automatic startup via Msconfig.

Something like this configuration could lessen your problems for video editing, another thing that is not obvious at the time is that when you cut and paste this loads up the clipboard especially on video, after you have pasted the clipboard contents and have finshed with that particular clip, click on an empty space and copy, this clears the clipboard.

This will probably raise more questions for you, but if you ask here someone will try and help.

Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend with their computer. They were having trouble with popups (adware). They are not experienced with computers and somehow got some info off the web about deleting spyware files in the registry. Well they deleted some registry entries but don't remember which ones, and ever since the computer won't boot. It is a Compag with XP Home. It does give an option to try the Compaq restore, which runs for almost 30 minutes but doesn't change anything. I can boot in safe mode. Is the easiest fix just to install windows XP over the top of the existing install. They have some files (a script) that have to be saved.

Depending on what Adware/Spyware program was used to remove entries there may be a restore option in the particular program used.

The Safe Mode screen has an option worth trying, "Last Known Good Configuration".

Using System Restore is worth considering.

Beth- obviously you have taken my post the wrong way.

Computers are just gigantic calculators; there is fundamentally no difference between the two devices except that a home computer can do a whole lot more calculations than that solar powered thing that comes free with a box of frosted flakes. The pictures on a monitor are nothing more than math equations telling the machine where to place (mathmatically derived) colors. Any freshman-level computer science class will tell you the same thing.

The reality of the situation is this:
Millions of businesses entrust their data to these things. Many millions of peoples use these things every day without them blowing up in their faces.

I understand that it's fun to bash Windows, I do it all of the time. Frankly, everyone can relate. The only point I was trying to make is that if you have had many problems across a variety of Windows platforms, that there is a broader issue at hand here.
