Greetings

I ran the backup for Exchange Bkup this past weekend and well it FAILED. This is part of the msg that comes back after backup/verify:

Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\DSADATA\edb.log --- skipped
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\DSADATA\temp.log --- skipped Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\MDBDATA\edb.log --- skipped Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\MDBDATA\rmp.log --- skipped File 'APO.LOG' in use File 'BFO.LOG' in use File 'EVO.LOG' in use, etc...

Any ideas as I really want to start backing up the email system.

Note: I am using Be 8.6.

thanks

Backup Exec cannot backup the database files that make up Exchange, like pub.edb, priv.edb, etc during online backups. However, it does backup the contents of those databases during online backups. To do a flat-file backup, stop all the Exchange services and backup the Exchange directory. Do you have the remote agent running on exchange server if that server is remote? Follow steps below to enable Exchange/Mailbox backups:

A) On Exchange server

1) Create one new Mailbox enabled user ( bkadmin )

2) Add "bkadmin" to Domain Admin & Local Administrator groups

3) Start Exchange Administrator utility and grant bkadmin user permissions on site object (Admin Role)
(Delegate control---Full Administrator)

B ) On Media Server

1) Log on using bkadmin to exchange domain

2) Configure Outlook profile using Exchange service

3) Send Mail to some different user

4) Confirm that Exchange Administrator utility is installed and connecting to exchange server

5) From Exchange server, copy EDBBCLI.DLL file to \winnt\system32 (to the Backup Exec server)

(it is very essential that EDBBCLI.DLL file to be exactly the same version
on both the Exchange server and the BackupExec server)

6) Copy MAPI32.DLL from Program Files\common files\system\mapi\1033\nt to Veritas\Backup Exec\ NT

7) Stop all the Backup Exec services

8) Rename the bewinui.uni file to bewinui.old ( Path= Program files\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\DATA )

9) Restart all the backup exec service

10) Start Backup Exec and select the mailboxes and provide connect info as bkadmin

Also make sure that you are running the most current Build of Backup Exec 8.6 which is Build 3878.
You can download it from here:

If you have the Exchange agent you will not need to go through all the steps Qdog outlined for you. I'm sure it works. Just as long as you have the Exchange agent installed than your backup selections should include the following windows that you need to check, "Microsoft Exchange Directory" and "Microsoft Exchange Information Store". These 2 selections backup the Priv.edb, pub.edb and dir.edb. You do not select this at the directory level. If you have the exchange agent the 2 selections I just mentioned are what you select. You just browse to the server that has exchange and then select these 2 items. If you do not have the Exchange agent you should purchase it. Very important to have an exchange aware backup so you can back up the databases online.
