Hello,

I'm trying to revive a cisco 2503 router. I know all the process I have to go through to recover the password but I have got a little problem. I can successfully see on my hyper terminal windows the start up process of the router but I can't type anything in. I've been told that the router may have been configured to not allow access at the keyboard. Does anybody know anything about that? I would really apprecciate if someone could give me some tips on how to solve this problem. The strange thing also is that during the start up the router accept the ctrl break key and abort the start up, so evidentially even if the keyboard is disabled still the break key is accepted.
All I can get is this by the way:

System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c), SOFTWARE
Copyright (c) 1986-1996 by cisco Systems
2500 processor with 6144 Kbytes of main memory

%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 11.2 may not be correctly under
stood.
Abort at 0x11195C4 (PC)

Anything I try to type in, it is not accepted from the router. What I also notice is that hyper terminal gets a bit stuck somtimes.
Any Idea.
Please let me know.
Thank you.

Either the router's console parameters have been changed, or you are using the wrong parameters for hyperterminal. I believe the default settings is 9600-8-none-1-none. That setting can be changed in the router to something else, and you need to find out what it has been changed to if that is the case.

If you believe the parameters match up correctly, try rebooting the device you are consoling in with. I found that sometimes helps with Win2000 machines. If you can disable the use of a keyboard in a Cisco router, that is the first Ive ever heard of such a thing.

I may not have understood your question. If you are getting no response at all with hyperterminal right off the bat, then my solution will solve it. However, if your hyperterminal session stops responding after that error message (%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 11.2 may not be correctly understood. Abort at 0x11195C4), then it looks like a problem with your IOS - and will probably need to erase it and install the latest version.....

(%SYS-4-CONFIG_NEWER: Configurations from version 11.2 may not be correctly understood. Abort at 0x11195C4)

That is the exact last message I get before the router get completely stuck. During all the start up process anyway I can't type anything in and also after that error. The only recognized key stroke are ctrl - break but other than that I can't type anything anyway. I have the IOS so I don't care if I have to reinstall the IOS, the only problem is I don't know how to proceed to reinstall the IOS if I can't get to type the command "copy tftp flash".

Can you think of any other way to reinstall the IOS without being able to use the keyboard or the command?

Thank you IllegalOperation.
By the the suggest me an illegal operation.

Thanks.

Hi
it seems to be something wrong with configuration
Can you try It?
1. power off your router
2. connect any pc or teminal by console cable
3. press and hold brake or ctrl+brake and power up router
4. wait 60 sek still hold brake or crlt+brake
5. when appear prompt like that > without routers name
6. write command o/r 0x42 (router start from flash)
7. if flash demaged write o/r 0x41 (router start from ROM)
8. next press i
9. router reload and start ignoring configuration
10 .and now write command write erase
11.next write command configure terminal
12. write command config-register 0x2102
13. press crtl+z and write command reload
14. finally make new configuration.

If you have any question? leave some information
Bye
Mac

As I've written in the first post

I tried ctrl-break but I didn't hold it before to power on the router. Do you think that will make any difference?
I'll try tomorrow anyway.
Thank you.

I solved the problem I can now type and configure the router.
I have another problem now. I want to update the IOS from Version 11.2 to 12. I checked if I have enought Flash memory and I've got 8 MB so I can Update. When I try to erase flash to make space for the new version or I try to write on the flash in anyway it tells me that the flash is read only. Does anybody remember how the attribute from read only to write?

Thank you.

I solved all my stupid problems. I've successfully updated the router and erase the configuration. The keyboard problem was the cable unproperly done (I did it :-( )And the other stupid problem was that I didn't boot from the rom and I couldn't write on flash while I booted from it. I booted from Rom and everything was ok.

Thanks for your help.
