hello
I think I have a DNS problem.
Originally we had ISDN conection and our mail was routed via a pop3 client. But we have now gone to broadband with a static IP so we decided to have mail come straight to the exchange server. The sever is Win2000 running DNS and exchange on the same box.

When mail is sent to a user it is bounce straight back with an undeliverable message.

So after reading the post here I went to DNSReport.com and get the following report when trying a users address

Trying to connect to all mailservers:

mail.btconnect.com. - 193.113.154.2 [Could not connect: Got an unknown RCPT TO response: 550 Unknown local user 'bob@psctraining.co.uk'
]

But if I use postmaster all seems fine as below ( also the message is not bounced back)

Trying to connect to all mailservers:

mail.btconnect.com. - 193.113.154.2 [Successful connect: Got a good response [250 Recipient OK.]]

Please could someone point me in the correct direction

thankyou

Marc

Try this command in dos...

telnet mail.btconnect.com 25 ->get unable to connect.

telnet 193.113.154.2 25 ->can connect

have you set up an MX record with your isp? if not call them and request that it be done. Basically it doesn't appear that your IP address is tied to mail.btconnect.com.

Good luck

sorry... my mistake.

Your IP definitely isn't 193.113.154.2, that's a UK address. there is already an MX record set for mail.btconnect.com on that IP so chances are very good you won't be able to use it for your server.

Hi thanks for the quick reply your right the ip bt gave started with 212.x.x.x

Does that mean there is an error at my end or is it a BT issue as they are the isp.

Any more help would very much welcomed

Marc

what is the name of your mailserver? is it mail.btconnect.com or something else?

The best place to start is with your ISP. call them and ask them about the MX record for the mail server name you want, they can check the status and maybe help you out. If you don't have an MX record associated with your mail server, you can't do anything.

the mail server name is psc-server.psc.co.uk
that is the servers name on the local network. This is all a bit foreign to me I have not really delt with DNS and mail servers before.

But exchange is looking for mail on psctraining.co.uk

thanks so far

Think you're best off to call your ISP and discuss this with them. You're just going to be spinning your wheels until you talk to them.

Your MX record for your domain and for btconnect.com are listed as smtpsrvr.btconnect.co.uk and smtpsrvr.btconnect.com at IP addy 193.113.154.2. Also when running the Dns report at your mx record smtpsrvr.btconnect.com is reporting that it's name is dswu27 and not psc-server.psc.co.uk. So you need to check what server or computer is actually using 193.113.154.2.

I hope you are not using NAT for your broadband else you would have to use your NAT ip for the MX record as well.

you may also trying doing a ping to your mail server to see whether it can be resolve

example
ping mail.abc.com and you should be able to see an ip address reflected

if you can't see any or the ip reflected is not your static IP address, add it in your DNS server or look for your ISP to add in the MX record if you are not hosting your own DNS server.

it is also a good practise to add a reverse DNS for reverse resolution.

Finally spoke to BT today, and their respose was email the dns team and we will look into it.

My advice is don't use BT they are to big and nobody seems to know what the other person is doing, this move to broadband has been a catalogue of errors.

thanks for all the help from everyone, staytuned and lets see what happens monday

Marc

That is sad, the ISP's I deal with here in alberta take care of things right away. No waiting.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

just an update

Believe it or not I am still waiting, spoke to BT today and was told "should be done today".

let this be a warning to you all

anyone know some good static ip isp's in the UK?

Marc

How are things going? Got this from Sam Spade.

dns 193.113.154.2

193.113.154.2 has valid reverse DNS of mail.btconnect.com

whois -h magic 193.113.154.2

It seems they have done it at last but they have pointed at the router ip address NOT the server ip address
On dnsreport.com I now get

: Try connecting to the following mailserver:
mail.psctraining.co.uk. - 217.45.142.238

Step 2: If still unsuccessful, queue the E-mail for later delivery.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trying to connect to all mailservers:

mail.psctraining.co.uk. - 217.45.142.238 [Could not connect: Could not connect to mail server (connection refused by remote mailserver).]

Have I done anything wrong or is this still a bt mx issue

thanks

Marc
