Header Footer includes

Hi,
I'm new to PHP and to this forum... I created header.inc and footer.inc and placed them in a folder named "includes" in my root folder. I can get to these files just fine from any subdirectory of different depths, the problem that I am having is all the links and images are broken unless the index.php is exactly one directory deep relative to the root folder. What can I do so that I can include the same header and footer and not have these broken links and images? Thanks in advance!
