Greetings All:

Here a new one (on Me). We recently had a new T-1 dedicated Point-to-Point circuit installed to one of our branch offices. After the Qwest guy had done his thing I looked over the smart-jack (SM)install, and was rather alarmed to see that he had only connected a single pair (two wires) between the SM and the punch down block. It has always been my experience that a T-1 requires 2 pairs (4 wires).

Well after an iquirie with our Qwest rep we both discovered the "new" standard known as HDSL2. This apparently is a fairly recent item to come from a new ANSI standard to help slow down the rapid use of installed copper.

I haven't fired up this new circuit yet, so we shall see how well it plays with a WIC-T1 Cisco card.

Has anyone else run into this recently?

Yep most DSL lines are only 1 pair . I think the only thing missing at least until recently they did not have strict SLA's for DSL connections . I think as dsl matures and they are able to run the connections further from the CO most T1's will be dsl in nature .

HDSL is a real T1 its not DSL... there is a high voltage on the pair. But yes they are availabe in both 4 wire and 2 wire configs and both work well. they are nice and easy for the telco to troubleshoot when there is a problem too.
