HDMI cable issue with HP pavilion media center vista

That would be up to your video card drivers. What video card do you have? Have you tried using its Software to change the settings?

Nvidia GEforce 9500GS ... will attempt to access software settings and see what happens. If anybody has any simple answer as to how to configure it to display the desktop on the VGA monitor, and TV on the HDMI TV without unplugging either one, please let me know. TIA

sandwedger - update the video and audio (HDA) drivers for that video card...

in the Audio Settings you will have to route the output audio to the HDA device...

also, there are some playback softwares out there that do not work well with the HDA sound, so try other apps...

I had no problem setting up the video for the TV in the Nvidia control panel, so now I can run both the VGA monitor and the HDMI TV simultaneously, but I still haven't solved the audio to TV problem. In the "help" tab of the Nvidia control panel, there are no references to "audio" or "sound", which leads me to believe that audio isn't included on the video card. Now I have to figure out how to route the audio to the TV via the HDMI cable. ???

Which nVidia model are we talking about?

I am not sure if you can route external audio through the HDMI cable, only the audio from the gfx card...

But most TV's do have audio RCA inputs also, e.g. for hooking up ancient VCR or some DVD players...

It was a struggle, but I finally found the solution: right click "Volume" icon in system tray > click "Playback Devices" > set "Realtek HDMI Output" as default. That routes the audio through the HDMI cable plugged into the Nvidea card. How can something so simple be so hard to find? I must be getting old ....
