HDD S.M.A.R.T Disabled 1

I receive the following message on bootup 'HDD S.M.A.R.T Disabled', can anybody tell me what this feature is supposed to do?

S.M.A.R.T. stands for Self Monitoring And Repair Technology.
If your BIOS supports it, enable it.
You're getting the message because your HD supports it but it's NOT enabled.
