Having trouble deploying RPC over HTTP 1

Dear Exchange Gurus,

I have been tasked with setting up RPC over HTTP. So far I have followed the instructions here:-

Everything went OK until I came to test with Outlook. I get a username and password prompt, but it does not accept my domain credentials.

I have a single Win2003 SP2 with Exchange 2003 SP1. The Exchange server is also acting as the IIS / RPC proxy server. I am using basic authentication over SSL.

I have followed the troubleshooting tips here:-

I was able to browse the following:-

https://mail.ourdomain.co.uk/rpc/rpcproxy.dll

Which I believe means the certificate is installed OK.

Has anyone come across this before? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

One thing you might want to do is isntall Exchange 2k3 SP2.

Are you using Outlook 2003.

I haven't used RPC over HTTP yet, but I'm researching it for my mobile users. good luck

I made a mistake in my first post - I do have SP2 installed on my Exchange 2k3 server.

Yes, I have been using the technet pages. I have been through most of the troubleshooting bits on there and so far it's not worked.

That Petri link is great though - Really useful. I made a couple of changes suggested on that page on Tuesday and rebooted the server. Unfortunately I'm still having the same issue with the username/password not being accepted.

It seems to be some kind of IIS/RPC authentication issue. I will have another look when I get some time and post my results on here. Unfortunately my users keep on asking me to fix things.... It's just me me me with some people! :->

Just for everyone's information, I eventually resolved this issue by following the instructions for configuring Outlook on the Petri site:-

The instructions on this page differ from Microsoft's instructions in so far as you DO NOT check the box saying "Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL".

After unchecking this box the connection worked OK. I don't know exactly what this option means, but by removing it everything started working OK.

Are you using a proper SSL certificate. I had big problems with my internall created cert which was basically not verified and required human interventian when used with OWA. Obiously when Outlook tried to connect with RCP over HTTP(s) it just didnt work....
