Having prob burning rar files 1

I have a dvd+r /rw and i have burned dvd's of all sorts.
But i have a 4 gig program that is broken up into over a 100 rar files and nero ultra 6 wont burn them to dvd, gives me an error message.
Wonder if anyone can help me with this. I did check the help inside Nero, no luck there.

More info needed:

- Operating System version (all updates applied?)
- Type of file system (NTFS or FAT32)
- Make/Model of burner
- Whether you have ever been able to burn more than 4GB of data to a DVD

FAT32 is limited to 4GB files. We need to also know what type of DVD you are selecting in Nero's project setup. For example, there's DVD-ISO, DVD-UDF, etc.

Funny thing is, when i see posts like this, i wonder why the person didnt put standard info in, guess i know why now, not thinking!

NEC - 1000A DVD+R
I have burned copies of my dvd movies, i havent exactly looked to see if they were more than 4 gigs in size.

But i imagine have burned more than 4 gig worth of standard folders with files and progs of all types in them, including rar files. I have added folders in some cases til it was near full, so i would have gone over the 4 gig limit.

I burned just one of the rar files on a cdrw and it burned ok. But that was a cdrw, not a dvd+r.

These rar files, the contents of them have extensions ending in .mds and .mdf
I have never seen these extensions before, what would they be and is the burner refusing to burn them because of the file types inside the rar folders?

No, the contents of the RAR file shouldn't matter.

1) What is the exact error message you're getting?
2) And again, what type of project in Nero are you trying to use (DVD-ISO, DVD-UDF, etc)?
3) And finally, when you select all the RAR files in Windows Explorer, right-click the selection and go to Properties. Report back with the exact size.

4,147.8 mb is the exact size

I didnt notice this before as the actual error message is at the top and then each rar file is counted off. The actual error message is: "The listed files have no unique Joliet name".

Thats gotta be a good clue for you cdogg. Right now it means i have to read up on what that means, lol.
In my nero 6 ultra it doesnt really say, it just says what do you want to burn, and i click on "data disk". I didnt point that out as it felt it wasnt the answer you were actually looking for. However, this may be what you ARE looking for. At the end of a successful or unsuccessful burn Nero always asks if i want to save the info for this ISO, and i think it specifically says ISO1, but for sure it mentions ISO. Is that what you were looking for?

These is secondary to my problem for sure, but the rar files, the contents of them have extensions ending in .mds and .mdf. Can you tell me what these extensions are, or what they are associated with, or what programs they are for? It is supposed to be an encyclopedia prog.

You are probably using Nero's Smartstart selector. Instead, go to Start -> Programs -> Nero -> Nero Burning ROM. When the program opens, it should start a project wizard automatically. If you do it this way, you will see the options in your project. It might be that you need to "relax" the Joliet restriction to allow filenames with more than 64 characters. Or you can use the ISO9660 file format.

If the future i will provide better info at the start. As i said above,i often wonder, when i go to help someone in a thread, why they dont provide the minimum of info needed and i see i did the same thing. Wont happen again on my end and thanks again, cdogg.

okay, i went to configure/preferences and in there i unchecked this:" check Joliet file names before burning"
I figured that would do it, but i get the same issue.
There is another item that is checked off called:" check for correct disc format before burning". This is checked off too, should i uncheck that as well?
I dont seem to find a place, yet, where i can tell it to burn via ISO9660 file format as you suggested, guess i had to dig deeper here.

I have tried it a few times, i even removed the check mark on "check for correct disc format before burning".
Still gives the same error message.
I should point out that this is only nero express 5.5, not ultra 6, i havent installed that yet, I thought i did.

It's not a matter of "unchecking" options necessarily. I'm not too familiar with 5.5, but there should be a ton of screenshots all over the web. You need to find the setting that allows "more than 64 characters" or try making a UDF DVD if that version of Nero lets you.

Otherwise, install version 6 and be done with the mess!

ok, thanks guys, i am just gonna install newer nero ultra 6 that i have, i actually forgot that i didnt install it, the menu and such look much the same from one version to another.

I think your problem is this:

From the Nero website:

"Currently there is no way to store filenames with more than 64 characters on an ISO or Joliet CD. Longer filenames are possible with UDF file system (but such long filenames are not supported by the Nero UDF implementation"

Your post shows that ISO level 1 is on which allows for 8+3 filenames and with your RAR files you actually use 2 extensions (rarfile.RAR001.RAR) not to mention that your posted filename is 70 characters long.

So I think you should RENAME your archives and also you could use the old style RAR filenames (like encycl.rar,encycl.r00,encycl.r01).

Like it was also mentioned, there is a setting in Nero to allow more than 64 characters. However, the statement that temporello posted is basically saying that Nero is not designed to inherently work with such disks after they've been created. That's not to say you can't make them with Nero.

I agree that the best thing for you to do is to truncate your filenames and make sure none are placed in any subdirectories on the DVD.

I think i am going to just install ultra 6 as this version can read the long names.

I did find that info above via google as well, and thats likely what the prob is.
