For some reason Im not understanding what Im doing wrong.

mobo is asus P5Q Pro Turbo -
I have 1 sata hd, also IDE dvd writer and IDE hd also connected.

The sata hd is plugged to sata-e1 port.

When I plug my new sata hd to the sata-e2 port, system cant find operating systems on reboot. Seems I cant get both sata drives to work together. I can remove old hd and replace with new, boots fine.
In BIOS, all seems ok. I dont want the RAID config, Its set to ide right now and I have also tried the ACHI setting.

Any ideas?

make sure it tries to boot from the right hdd (try bios boot menue)

It doesnt seem to recognize the 2nd hd in bios so I cant change boot order. Each hd works by itself on a normal boot.

dont use the esata connectors, esata means external sata, use the sata 1 to 5 for internal connected drives

ah, assumed that was for raid only. I will give it a go then.

Lemon, those are not eSata connectors, but the information given was correct, in that he should use the other SATA ports...

and Rob, actually those are for RAID only, if used together... and all the other ports can be setup as RAID as well, using the Intel ICH10R utility...

These connectors are for the Serial ATA signal cables for Serial ATA hard disk drives. If you installed Serial ATA hard disk drives, you can create a EZ Backup or a Super Speed configuration with the Drive Xpert Technology through the onboard Silicon Image® Sil5723 controller.

So heres where we are at:
I plugged my sata HDs to the sata 1 and sata 2 (not sateE1, E2), now its almost all correct. I can boot, I have both sata drives listed and can access both. I think I have it set as ACHI in BIOS. All is normal as expected.
But, on the mobo, there is a connector for IDE which I have a DVD optical and an ide hard drive. I can see the dvd optical in bios and after boot, but cannot see the ide hd in bios or after boot.
I tried the ide hd in another pc, it is working....

Hmmm..

Are the master/slave jumpers set correctly for the IDE devices?

check the jumpering of the HDD, set it to MASTER, then check the DVD and set it to SLAVE, the position on the cable is irrelevant (this only comes in to play when you use CS (Cable Select))...

generally check the seating of the power and IDE cables...

hahaha if thats all it is, then I should get a public flogging for forgetting the basics.

But prior to having 2 HDs, all was well. It was only after I added 2nd sata drive is when this all started. I also know, there were no jumpers to begin with on dvd or hd, but Ill correct that.

Stay tuned for the outcome!!

well, late followup.
I put a jumper on the ide hd as master..all is well with the world.
I can see the 2 sata drives, the optical drive and the ide hd.

silly me...
