Read me FAQ on re-installing.

You have two options:
---------------------
Dirty Re-installation of windows (you won't lose any files or programs)

or

Full Format (format your hard-drive and start from scratch)

FAQ748-1599

Hope this helps. [deejay]

You could post more information about your computer, that would help. For example: Do you have utility software on your computer, like Norton System Works ?

Also, you could open MSINFO32, Tools, and start up programs.
You could start UNCHECKING startup programs, and then rebooting to see if you identify if one of your programs / applications is causing this (like an AntiVirus program or a utility program).
It could be your CD-Burning software, but that is pure speculation. My point being, that you could do some real simple troubleshooting, that is not time consuming before reinstalling.

If you are going to reinstall,,,,,,, you would want to UNCHECK every single item on the startup list before you began the process or reinstallation. If you do not do this, there is a good chance your reinstall won't be very successful.

update

i tried a diff hd with op sys same result so i unhooked the d drive and either c drive boots fine.

a 95 boot disk and a 98 boot disk scandisk both lockup as windows did with the d drive attached.

so its the d drive

before i fdisk and format that drive, any other ideas?

spacekowboy,

If there aren't any files that you need on the ROOT of the d drive, you can strip the attributes, (attrib -s -h -r d:\*.*), and then: delete d:\*.*
Once you've done that, there won't be a boot strap left to contend with on the d drive, but you'll still have your folders.

Then try running scandisk from the DOS prompt now:

scandisk d: /autofix /surface

This lets scandisk fix allocation table problems, and then does the full surface scan.
