The act of marking out portions of a document to disallow unauthorized people from seeing those sections.

thanks!

no it's a special word that's specific to documents. When the CIA blacks out certain classifed sections of documents when the document itself has been declassified. Or blacking out a SSN on a copy of a report. It's very specific word.

Thanks!

Just a note - redaction is a great word, but it does not just mean to black out portions of the document.

Any editing of a document in preparation for publication is redacting the document. All blacking out is redaction, but not all redaction is blacking out.

I would have guessed "censorship".

Oh! The word is more than just familiar to me - in its Russian pronunciation. I would have never guessed, though, that's what you had in mind; for the reasons CC stated. Glad you found it.

P.S. In my post I meant "redaction", not "censorship". We typed at the same time with Susan .

Redaction may be the process, but censorship may be the intent.

We are trying to force a policy to be implemented defining restrictions/access to specific documents and information prior to a major re-engineering project for the courthouse. We are going to be imaging a lot of documents, some of which are public but contain private information, some of them can only be accessed by specific personnel, etc. I'm writing some documentation to my boss about the requirements we need and needed to include the word in my documentation.

Thanks for everyone's help!!

somewhere here the word "expunging" was used.

I think that, in the U.S., "redaction" is becoming more associated with blacking out of text due to the Freedom of Information Act.

We hear of FoIA requests that are delayed pending redaction, and we also see more blacked out text (often referred to as "redacted text") in news referencing information acquired through the FoIA.

Really? It's interesting. It bears a different connotation for me, since in my college years journalism was both, my hobby and my minor.

In my college days I was a theology major before switching to computer science, and in biblical studies "redaction" refers to changes the text may have undergone before arriving at its present form.

Keep in mind, that redacting is the process of preparing a document for publication.

That includes, but not limited to, editing the document for accuracy; political correctness; verbosity; blacking out portions for privacy, security, or secrecy; and updating to current interpretation or word usage.

Freedom of Information Act?

Is this where you may be able to make out one word out of a full page document? The hypocrisy of it all.
