Installed Win2K about a month ago and still learning. Began to notice some weirdness: couldn't get a response to clicking "properties" on my harddrive. Sometimes it took forever to get a response to clicking on "Control Panel." Then I found two anonymous users listed under the users and passwords sections in Control Panel.

I deleted the users. Changed passwords. What else would be prudent?

- Reinstall Win2k or do a "repair"?
- Security settings changes?

Ran a virus scanner and nothing showed up. I have always had Norton running on this machine. Yes, it is on a cable modem, but I also use Zone Alarm Personal and a Linksys Router was a firewall.

Did you uprgrade or clean install? Matt Wray

Clean install on a new hard disk, then I installed the disk and moved over files from the old hard disk which I had re-installed as a slave...after the Win2k installation.

Those unknown users were probably profiles on the slave drive. If this is for home use, the security you have should be enough to keep out troublemakers.. Matt Wray

ONe thing about windows 2000 pro that I have run across is that it will not get rid of tmp files as it should.
Try doing a search on all of your hard drives for *.tmp then delete them and empty the recycling bin.
Then, go into the control panel, internet options and click the delete button for temporary internet files.
Also, have you run disk defragmentor?
With win2kpro, when the files become fragged, especially the swap file, it will become really sluggish.
Also one other thing to try is to go into the bios, and reset it to defaults. Depending on the bios, there should be a menu somewhere on what options to choose. After changing it to defaults, then make any necessary changes to it. Example would be changing the printer port to what the printer accepts, if you have an attached printer.
Also, how much free hard drive space do you have on your c:\ drive, or what ever drive letter you have windows installed on?
There are many factors for win2k that can affect its speed and response times. The best thing to do is to check the things I listed above. If no change, concider troubleshooting your hardware.
Also, how much ram are you using?

Try downloading and installing the Roll Up Package.
You can get it at the microsoft site.

Thanks.

I'm defragging in just a few momments.

Running with 384 Megs RAM and 30 Gigs of Unused disk space on a 40 Gig drive.

I'll check out a roll up package...whatever that is.

Thanks again.

Ahh, the Security Roll Up...that brings up a second question. The security Roll Up is for post Service Pack 2 changes, and I can't get SP2 to install on my machine. I attempted to the express download several times from the internet and everything went' flawlessly until the final 2%. Just after backing up files and installing most of the new files, it suddenly just stopped and recyled the little graphic (two file folders with pages flying from one to the other). Let it run for over two hours. No change. Uninstalled and tried again. Same result. Did it several times, made sure all other files were shut down. What I didn't do was act as if it was fully installed and reboot. I figure being without was better than dealing with an incomplete install. Any ideas or experience?
