I HAVE JUST PUT 256MB RAM AND A CD REWRITER IN MY PC BUT NOW WHEN I START MY COMPUTER IT COMES UP DISK BOOT FAILURE AND WINDOWS DOES NOT START CAN ANYONE HELP ALSO IS IT NATURAL FOR THE REWRITER TO MAKE A TICKING NOISE PLEASE HELP

It's good practice to replace things one at a time, so disconnect the writer see if it boots, determine which one is causing the fault.
Roms can tick if they are confused, this should dissapear the drivers are intstalled and working correctly.
PC100? 133? DDR? have you installed the correct ram type? for the board/processor?
Give more details and I can be more specific. Martin

hi
when my computer starts it reconizes the ram but not the drives but my cd writer works fine.its just windows will not start as it says disk boot failure also my drives have changed my d drive is now my cd rewriter and now e is my cd rom

Hi,
Fit the CDRW to the secondary IDE controller. If you have a DVD/CD-ROM on this controller then set the CDRW drive to slave. You may get errors on the drive if it is connected as slave to the Hard drive on the Primary IDE controller.

hi just taken the cd rewriter out and its perfect again. the only cable left in my system to connect the cd rewriter too is the one that runs through the hard drive and then go's to the primary slot?? but i notice when i load up it says primary smart hdd disabled has this anythig to do with it?????????????/ please help

Nope! this is just some extra info S.M.A.R.T drives post (if your drive is under 2 years old it is most likely will be smart).
Sounds like you havn't got the piggy back conector on the secondary ribbon?
If Primary and secondary are both the old UDMA 33 standard cables (course wires in ribbon) then just swop primary with secondary.
On the other hand if you are using one of the fine UDMA 66 cables you will have to buy a new one with piggy back for secondary so's you can connect both your roms to secondary.
Martin

When you have connected the DVD & CDRW on the secondary, on your first write you will be warned that it is not advisable to have two roms connected to one IDE channel, but this is the lesser of two evils, better on one channel than having the writer with the hard drive. Martin

paparazi - why is it advisable not to have two roms on one IDE channel?

I've never heard that before :-)
