Cheers mates !
I'd like to get some opinions on behavior of a Dell L783r PIII/766MHZ, W98SE, Modem, AOL, W98SE. Communication with the owner is limited because of a language issue, but "it doesn't work" was the message and I walked over to his flat to do a quick diagnostic. For starters, it wouldn't connect to AOL, and AOL couldn't 'initialize the modem' that it said was needed, after the attempt to connect failed.
I ran an adaware, spybot, and avg (about a month old defs) and they found nothing.
I didn't have a spare modem to t/s issue #1, but when I get the computer I'd like to have some more info to help figure it out and I'll have a modem to swap in.
Question 1.1. (bad card). If a modem (or any pci device) is dead or damaged, shouldn't it still show up in Dev Mgr ?
Question 1.2. (good card) Other than having a dead card, or a bad pci chipset, what else might cause a hardware device from not being recognized after you install a pci card, (tried all 4 slots and no isa's on this board). There was no 'new hardward found' box, nor does it show in Device Manager, nor does control panel utilities detect any modem.
----------------------------------------------------------
Issue #2
Another hardware issue that may or may not be related to the first, is that, without any pci card installed, (no isa slots on this board), or any other peripheral other than the mouse, keyboard, and monitor, it kept finding new hardware when there isn't anything physically installed. I even deleted all network and dial up adapters. There was an unknown device listed in Dev. Mgr. that kept coming back, and when I disabled it, it didn't appear as 'new hardware' anymore.
There were new entries (since last time I worked on this machine) in Dev. Mgr under network adapters, like adapter #2 VPN, and a wireless adapter and associated entries, like someone was trying to get it going through a wireless home network, and I removed all of these, rebooted and still got the 'found new hardware' on power on.
Question 2.1. Can ghost entries in Dev.Mgr trigger a 'found new hardware' box in W98 ? Unfortunatly, I didn't remember the syntax "set devmgr_show-nonpresent-devices=1" when I was there, but an answer to this question will help my general hardware t/s knowledge for when I get the machine to work on.
