I am beginning to develop a plan to move a network from Windows NT4 to 2000. The existing network is not being utilized as it should. So, I want to do thing right this time. I will be using a PDC and a SDC. Now there is only a PDC that is poorly configured. I will have 2-3 application servers, and 3-4 Citrix Metaframe servers. I would also like to have an ISA server and Exchange server. This is going to be a big project. I am hoping to upgrade some existing hardware to save cost, but I will need to purchase some new equipment. There will be at least 5 remote sites using applications from the primary domain. There will be about 60 concurrent users for one application server, 15 for another and 25 for the third. I am still learning hardware requirements so if there is anybody out there that has ideas or suggestions, I would be greatly appreciative. I am thinking that the PDC and SDC should have dual P4's and 1GB of RAM at least. Is this to much or not enough? I am running mostly Compaq servers now and have been happy with them. Are there any suggestions on the hardware for the Citrix servers? Actually, I already have two Citrix servers, the 15 and 25 user servers, but I need to configure for the 60 users of the application server. Citrix will handle the connections to the app server. I know this is a lot, but I am a one man band and could use the help.

Thanks,
RWH

As far as the MetaFrame servers are concerned, if you have 100 users, 2 dual-processor servers with 1Gb RAM should be more than adequate. I tend to favour servers with a mirrored pair of smallish (9-18Gb) drives over other configurations. Apps can, of course, be installed to the MF servers and published - you do not say how you use MetaFrame.

If the apps are more than simply MS Office, then you might need further MF servers, or more RAM. 2 or even 4Gb is not unheard of, and will certainly support 50 users in most environments. Which release of MF are you running - 1.8 or XP?

I think your specs for the PDC are very high, but depends what you are running on it. Better too much than not enough power! Presumably you will be running Terminal Services Licensing from it, since it must be run on a W2k DC.

I hope this is helpful CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
