I have read from several professional sources that typically, hardware compression will yield better results versus software compression. I'm talking DLT IV using Arcserve 9 now. Well, i had been having issues with hardware compression whereby 80GB tapes would max out just below 60GB. I realize compression ratios will vary based on the types of files being backed up and other factors, but I am testing hardware vs software compression now.

My first test was 10GB of data. Results:

Hardware Compression = 36 minutes, 298mb/min, 10.52GB size on media.

Software Compression = 28 minutes, 375mb/min, 9.56gb size on media.

My question is does anybody out there PREFER software compression over hardware compression? Is anyone doing software compression exclusively? I will test more, but feedback is greatly appreciated.

Some use only software compression because they want to use compression with the client agent to speed up the remote jobs.
