hardware boot time diagnostics

i have a quantum harddrive which i think died on me. What is a good util i can boot from to check the drive, format and partition it if neccessary?

These look windows based. I need soemthing i can boot into from dos.

you might be able to find a diagnostic on Maxtor's website (the company that 'acquired' Quantum
