hardset specific address

We have several big networks and people connect from home to get their email by going to http:\\webmail.mydomain.com. My problem is that when people are internal in the facility, they try to use that same address when they need to check their email from someone else's computer, and it wont work. We have two separate networks in the building, but they are serviced by the same router, which does not like you to go out and come back in....but they can connect to the internal ip.

So how do I make it so when someone goes to webmail.mydomain.com that it redirects to http:\\localip\exchange. Without going through DNS

I tried an alias, but it doesnt work.

Without using DNS, you would have to use the local hosts file on each computer, and in a big network, this is impractical.

There is no reaon why your server should not be able to serve webmail.mydomain.com on the internal network as well, but that's a web server issue and not really DNS. As long as the clients are directed to the correct internal IP address using either host files or DNS. You just need to make webmail.mydomain.com resolveable on your internal network. At the moment I suspect that internal clients will be getting webmail.mydomain.com resolving to the external IP address which is why it don't work. Can you confirm that if you try to resolve this URL from inside the network you get the external address?

How is your internal DNS set up?
