A computer that recently failed to boot up (It would attempt to load XP Pro, but crash before the loading screen appeared) until it was re-formatted has recently been giving me more cause for concern - first of all a License validation problem ( and now several files appear to be corrupted and running CHKDSK reveals 20-or-so unreadable blocks - and in repairing some of these blocks it stops XP loading at all.

Using the repair console, I have been able to use the original XP CD to replace the corrupted files - but can't help thinking that the HDD is on the way out.

Any thoughts?

If you know the make of the HD, then you may be able to use a diagnostic program at the manuf's site to check if the HD is bad.

It definatly IS on it's way out and you should not be attempting to repair it for any reason but to get the data off it. It's not worth the time and aggrivation.

franklin97355 - that was my thought, and the only reason I dabbled with it to make it work again was so that I could back-up all the things I didn't want to lose (onto CD obviously)
