I have a windows 2000 server (no DC) with 2 hard drive, one has windows 2000 server, and another hard dirve that has the data, the way it was setup, both of the hard drive were dynamic. NO mirroring. Now the bootable hard drive is not working, can't access it. I took the other hard drive that has the data on it, mount it on another computer, and it shows that is unpartioned, and i can't see the data on it, ??

how to recover the second hard drive ? do i have to mount it on a dynmaic master hard drive ?

Any help , i'm despert
Thanks,

Have you done any diagnostics on the harddrive that is not working! what are the symtoms of the boot HDD.

Does windows being to load ad then freeze?

Can you boot the OS in safe mode? you maybe able to insert the Win2k disks and repair the OS. If you are unable to do this thier is a possibilaty that you can download soem data recovery software.

Let me know how you get on.

Well, i could see the defected HD in the bios, but after that i get an I/O error and it doesn't boot up, i inserted Windows 2000 , and same error I/O and a code ( 000eee000 or soemthing like that ) windows said ,that it can't access this drive. apperattly the customer has a power problem over the weekend. Is that a hardware issue, or it could be recovered, i would love to recover it..

FOr the second hard drive, how do i retreive the data from it, if i mount it to any other computer as a secondry drive, under disk managememnt it said (unloacted)

any help ?

Rule of thumb, never use Dynamic Disks unless you got some sort of mirroring (besides the backup). Spanning over dynamic disks is making all the disks dependant on each other. If one fails, you loose the entire array.

There are companies that specialize in fixing hard drives, but it will take some time and some cash to get done... Sounds like you need it now.. so only thing is to get another disk, reinstall and restore your backups. I suggest you implement a mirroring strategy as well.

Thanks Reddlefty,

can yo recover a dynamic volume ?

Recover, I don't think so. Restore is your only option, unless your drive has a physical problem, like a head is broken and can be fixed by specialists. But like I stated earlier, this takes time and is not cheap.

Thanks all, i used GetdataBack , and it worked perfect, even though i had a problem (physical) with the hard drive and it worked like magic, it took almost 18 hours to scan the hard drive, but it worked, Thanks God :)
