I have A 9.5 Gig Hard Drive (SCSI), and I run Win98 with 333 Celeron, 128MB SDRAM etc.
When I click on 'C Drive'/Properties, it tells me that I have over 2 Gig of space. Yet error messages regularly appear, telling me that 'Your Hard Drive has run out of space. Please Use Disk clean-up to make some free space on your drive'.

As a result, any programs I have run erratically at best.

My PC used to work fine with less than 1 Gig free - I have deleted a lot of stuff from my hard drive and the problems still arise! What's wrong ??!!

Run Scandisk and defrag. Seems like win9x lies to you about its free disc-space. Occours often when the drive is fragmented.

Nostradamus

Sometimes, Windows just lies. For about a week my home PC had 6 gigabytes used and 32 terabytes free.

Windows has never been known for common sense. Nostradamus, on the other hand, has some good advice.

<a href= plain black box
I will notice that many applications or games, if I am say 11Gigs free, windows will typically report back to an older application you have 2Gigs free if you have more than 2 gigs, but sometimes when yer over 10G, it seems to think that 11Gigs free means 1Gig free and so forth, and this causes problems on some installers when nearing down to the 10.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
Hi,
 Run Scandisk, defrag, and if you have a HD management software, use it to check.. the registry of your O/S can be mistaken..!

If all that doesn't work... ISH... maybe, you'll have to re-install.. A good fresh re-installation is sure good to solve a lot of problem.. but that's the last solution you want to do, like everybody.. ;)

Ben_Cool
Ben_Cool
ben_cool@hotmail.com

Thats nothing unusual for Windowz if u ask me hehe.
Sometimes if certain applications or games are installed on my hdd it will refuse to defrag, complaining that theres an error on the hdd (I know full well theres not and its happened on two hdd's; my current hdd is only a month or so old).

Its not as serious as a problem to take BenCool's actions. Because it will do the same thing again if you reach the same size of your HDD the second time, regardless if you have just reinstalled and so forth.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
I know Karl, that's why I've written: but that's the last solution you want to do, like everybody.. ;)

But in some case, it worked..! That's why I said that.. it depends if you are unable to do thing or take action when it tell's you that, that I suggested this ultimate solution.. and redo your partition in the same time, even if you don't need too, don't take any chances..

But of course, if it's only a message, don't bother with it..!

Only helping...

Ben_Cool ;)

Ben_Cool
ben_cool@hotmail.com

Sorry not to have got back before - I haven't been able to get online for a little while !

Sure enough, Windows was telling me fibs!

After I ScanDisked and DeFraged, suddenly I discovered that I had just 100MB left on my 9.5 Gig HD (rather than 2.5 Gig free space !!!)

Thanks for all your tips - I didn't want to defrag because it takes so long, but as it turned out it did the trick, so it was well worth it!

Half of the computer industry seems to be dedicated to fixing all the mistakes that the other half make .... !!!

The more often you defrag, the faster it gets, Also I would use a defragger other than microsoft's like norton's speeddisk, which actually optimizes your drive, as well as the swap file. Or the one from Nuts&Bolts, I prefer either over Microsoft's defrag.
Karl
kb244@kb244.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
See my sig?
Jon Zimmer
b0rg@pcgeek.net
<a href= Aetea Information Technology
The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.
Did you run Norton Disk Doctor? I ran it once and it rescued a part of my drive I couldn't access and for a while after that, Windows and NDD said that my hard drive had a 2GB max size. Spooky, huh?
