how do i control disk cache in win2k?

disk cache for win2k? do you mean virtual memory? if that's the case then goto
control panel>>system>>advanced>>performance options>>change

you can select how much memory windows uses for applications or background services

no disk cache - like when you access data on HDD a small amount of data is read ahead (like 64k) and when next time an access is made, data is retrieved from ram and not hdd which is faster. its not virtual memory, its disk cache.

Like 98, you can only specify a network server or a role.
The controls on disk caching are limited.

You can however, increase the amount of ram that the file system uses to cache certain operations.... See this.

You can also cache most of the kernel files to RAM if you have enough...

Be careful with these, some applications do not like these settings, most notably those that take up a lot of RAM themselves, and are designed to use the swap file a lot. The third link references Photoshop specifically.

There are third party utilities to alter Windows 2000 Disk Caching, do a google search if you are interested.

thank you mattjurado, you help is greatly appreciated. as for the third link - ive ~450 mb ram, is this enough to perform this tweak? how much ram do the core windows files take?

I did a google search for you... I personally tried it once with several gig available, seemed to be okay after the change. The recommendations I see on the web are a minimum of 256mb, but recommended 512mb. Good luck, let me know the results if you try it.

yes it did help! when i quit games, stuff like icewind dale or warcraft 3, no wait times for the desktop to load - i have a 200mb temporary file cache for icewind dale, it took a few minutes for desktop to load after that before... thanx again.
