Please someone help me and fast before either the computer or I jump out the window.
I am building a pc from scratch only using original FDD and case.. new parts :
350W Power Supply
Pentium III 800 MHz
New motherboard
Inno 3D Graphics Card AGP 64Bit 64Mb
256Mb Ram
30Gb Maxtor Hard drive
DVD
CD R/RW
The problem: the system hangs at various times before getting as far as putting an operating system on it.
I have : had the motherboard, chip and fan tested by a local shop. Tested OK.
- breadboarded across the desk
- run Maxtor tests on Disk and low level formatted disk.
- tried not using CD/ DVD drives
- tried diferent FDD, HDD and also their cables.
- tried different jumper settings on drives i.e. CS and Master.
- tried different RAM chip
- tried diferent video card although not AGP
- tried different boot up software i.e. Maxtor has its own program for FDISK and Format. It crashed.
- tried different boot up disks of Win 98 - sometimes it looks like it is going to start loading and then crashes, sometimes it doesn't get beyond the System Configuration page.
Sometimes the fdd just stops, sometimes it says it can't find command.com although the same disk boots up on another computer.
Before the motherboard, chip and fan went to the shop it usually got part way through loading Win 98. Now it won't even look at it.
You name it I think I have tried it....or have I?????
Please is there someone out there who can help before I finally have to give in and give the whole computer to the shop to look at.
That really would be the last resort.
Yours hopefully
