This is frightening but does happen.

not just hal.dll but many other files in windows\system32 just disappear.
Typical message is
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Other symptoms which you get before the fatal reboot:
Parser message: Value creation failed " at line 451
Application popup: ntvdm.exe - System Error : NTVDM encountered a hard error
After rebuilding the machine before and rebooting I found this log file at about the time things went wrong.

Looks like my PC is not on the Windows Catalog for Windows Server 2003. So when Windows Update does its stuff it has horrendous side effects.
Moral only use Windows server 2003 on an accredited machine.
