Anyone ever use Groupwise 5.5 and .net together. I need to build an application that will automatically send emails - but does groupwise 5.5 work with STMP?

A person I work with keep telling me that groupwise 5.5 and vb .net will not work together. Do you have any resources that I can go to to learn what I need to do to write an app that will email from groupwise within .net? I'm not exactly sure what i need to search for to do this.
