Groupwise 6 - Sending emails to nicknames

If I have a distribution list name "WestEnd NY and NJ" and I added 3 users (jjones, ejones, ajones). I also created a nickname "appleny" for WestEnd NY and NJ. Now, I want people from the outside to send emails to appleny so they don't have to type westend NY and NJ. How can I do this?

I can receive emails internal but I can't receive them externally. Help!

Is the nickname visibility set to "system" ?
