I setup a GPO to push an application to computers on the domain. I was just doing it to my machine for testing purposes. I had created the msi file myself and the push worked great. However I made some errors with the MSI, so I uninstalled the application and completely removed the GPO, ran a gpupdate, rebooted etc....and now even days later as soon as I boot up, the damn thing gets installed again and shows up under add/remove programs. I'm baffled how this is possible since there is NO GPO for this installation. Not sure where to start, any ideas?

Did you have the "Uninstall this application when it falls out of the scope of management" checked? Similar problems happen with the redirected folders process.

Under the deployment tab when you go into the properties of the application.

What does gpresult say on the machine in question?

when I run gpresult on that machine there is nothing listed under computer or user for the gpo in question...and given there is no gpo since I deleted it, this looks correct. However if I go to the desktop (winxp) under add/remove programs, voila its there again.

Okay, what happens if you recreate the GPO as before and this time check the "Uninstall this application when it falls out of the scope of management" under the deployment tab.
Then simply remove the computer or user from the security group for the gpo. Unless you've simply applied it to an OU, then just remove the GPO and gpupdate and reboot.

well the only dilemna I'll have is that I deleted the msi file as well. I was trying to make my own but didn't work so I've removed it as well. So I'm not sure how I would re-create it successfully, but perhaps I can try. BTW do you have any suggestions on how to create your own msi files. Most applications I've seen are very complicated and robust.

We're trialling advanced installer at the moment for making our own msi-I'm not sure how good free ones are to be honest but some vendors like Adobe/MS etc have things for tweaking and installshield has one too. Also, I think WISE has one for free but I'm not 100%.

Are you sure the GPO has been deleted from everywhere? Also, each GPO has a unique ID(right click the GPO go to Edit and then right click the GPO name at the top and go to properties, this will show you the GPO's ID)
then open up explorer and go to \\domainname\sysvol\domainname Where domainname is your domain name and you'll see the policies. When the GPO is deleted it should disappear from here too.
