This is all in my humble opinion:
I use it and I put it on all the computers I work on. It is easy to update and it works. You can sign up to have them send you an email when there is an update available or you can set the program to look as often as you like for updates.
I put it on a computer today that had 14 files infected with W32/magistr.b and 2 files with badtrans, which it caught immediately. The only thing I don't like is there are no special instructions of how to get rid of the manual parts of the virus, like the Win.ini file and the registry. Luckily, I know where to look.
Remember, NO anti virus program will work unless you update the virus definitions.
Why it's free, I don't know. However, innoculate was free for quite a long time, then they started charging for it, so I guess it could happen we would have to pay for it later

I have another computer at another site far away and I set it up with Grisoft (AVG) and Zone Alarm. It seems to me (and I could be wrong as I deleted it) that I read someone in the program specs that they generally have monthly updates. Well, considering how often I get up-dates from Norton and "The Cleaner" I decided that it just felt too risky. I decided on the free trial of Innoculate (3 months) instead for that computer and it has automatic updates, etc.

Monthly updates would rule it out at once really. Mind you, Nortons updates once a fortnight (every two weeks), even though they produce the fix promptly, so you have to realise that a virus is around and go and get your protection. This is for a computer not connected to the Internet so you cannot use LiveUpdate. You have to download a 5Mb file that will update any of the Norton products, which is a bit of a nuisance. I think it is a weekly update. The grisoft one is 3Mb which is not a lot better.
I use Vpop email server here. This has a very useful add-on that will bin any executable that arrives as an attachment. That caught four copies of badtrans before Nortons updated. Peter Meachem

I have had no problems with AVG for several months now on multiple PCs. I did have problems with many other antivirus programs, especially Norton, interfering with my development work. I did notice that AVG keeps fairly large files (AVG*.dat) on the hard drive to track virus checks.
Daily updates may be necessary if, 1) you have a lot of money to give, or 2) you have a corporate network with ongoing virus problems.
For the home user, this is the only antivirus protection that is currently free. The updates have been automatic and timely. It is still wise, however, to never open email attachments, especially from unknown sources. NO antivirus program can protect you from a new undiscovered attack.
