grinding noise on start up

Don't know what tests you ran, but this problem is 95%+ caused by fans, usually the cpu fan.
Your other choice is hard drive.

Sounds like the floppy drive to me??
Go into bios and take the floppy out of the "boot order" sequence list.
This should verify or not if it is the floppy making the noise.
You could use a small diameter hose (screen washer type) to place around the PC and against the ear, this should help in pin point diagnosis. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

We tested to see if it was the fans by disconnecting the fans and then switching on the CPU for a few seconds, the noise was there so we know that the grinding noise is not the fans.

You could pull power on the floppy to see if it is coming from there. But be careful because it is pretty easy to mis-attach it on re-assembly.
And you might pull the speaker cable. It is possible that the hardware driver has gone bad. But they generally are a solid failure. Ed Fair
