graduated color tints

I am unable to create a PDF file from a DTP page (Publisher XP) that retains graduated colour effects as a background to my text. For example a pink fading to white or a black fading to transparent over a graphic. The result is a full 100% color result with no fading. I am using Acrobat 5. 150, 300 and 600 dpi outputs have been attempted.
Please note that my "Instructor" tag is that I teach senior computing at a local high school in NZ.
