I have an HP running Win XP Home. I was having problems with IE6. I went to and followed instructions and it seemed to clear everything up. I can access all websites except Google.com. Anynideas why and and how can I get it back to where I can access Google. I cannot run restore because I had to shut restore off. Any ideas?

Linney, I tried to get to that location now I cannot get to any URL that I type in. I keep getting in front of every url I type in. This is what was happening before I downloaded and repaired IE 6. Any ideas????

Usually there is more than one file named HOSTS on your system.

There should be one in c:\windows\systems32\drivers\etc

There should not be another one in a different folder.

This utility will also try to correct HOSTS issues:

Make sure you empty your temporary internet files, and see if you can ping a problem website, from a command prompt.

For example, if google fails, go to start>run, type cmd, hit enter.

From the command prompt type

ping
Do you get 4 replies? If yes, then its a browser or spyware issue affecting the browser. If not, its likely a communications issue. Call your ISP for support or post back details on how you connect, dial up, dsl, router used, etc...

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

There was a Host file in Windows/Help file that I found and deleted and that seems to have cleared everything. I can get to Google.com and what appears to be just about everything. The only thing that isn't working is the "search" icon at the top of IE. The search comes up blank. Any ideas on how to get the search back
