Hi, everyone!

Could someone please help me with this one: my computer (with WinXP Professional) won't load the gmail homepage ( I've tried turning off the firewall, the antivirus and the ad blocker. It just says it can't find the page. google.com works perfectly, and so do the other google services I've tried. What could be wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help.

None of them work. I've tried them all. Any other suggestions?

This one doesn't work either.

Have you tried deleting temporary internet files including all offline content?

Maybe also check your HOSTS file.

I've cleared the Temporary Internet Files, but I don't know what a HOSTS file is and where to find it.

Goto:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Open the file "hosts" with notepad.

Most files only have 1 entry..

127.0.0.1 localhost

Make sure yours doesn't have anything for Gmail or Google.

The hosts file does have only one entry: localhost.

The problem seems to be with secure websites: I can't log in to sourceforge ( ), nor can I read my yahoo! mail (it won't load my inbox, which is a secure connection). So I guess this is the problem. Any work-arounds you know of?

I'm assuming that you are using IE, have you tried to use FireFox or another alternative browser?? One of my users had a problem exactly like this and I repaired it by reregistering some .dll files, unfortunately I can't remember which ones they were. If you can get into the sites with FireFox try re-installing IE to see if it works. Just a suggestion.

I've tried: Mozilla, Firefox, Opera and IE. None of them worked.

Do you have a firewall that blocks port 443?

My firewall didn't block 433 and I've tried everything Microsoft said. No result.

I reinstalled Windows and now the secure pages work fine. Thanks for your valuable help, but no thanks to Microsoft.
