Suppose I have one forest with 3 sites. Each site has a domain. Each domain has only one computer. Thus each site
has one domain controller which is for the domain located at that site.

The computer's role for domain A is:
schema master, domain naming, rid, pdc, infrastructure master

The computer's role for domain B is:
rid, pdc, infrastructure master

The computer's role for domain C is:
rid, pdc, infrastructure master

f the global catalog cannot be with the infrastructure master, which domain controller(s) will I be able to put the global catalog?

Thanks in advance

roland

We ran into the same thing. After reading the Technet articles that state the Infrastructure Master should not be on the same DC as the Global Catalog (due to possible UPDATE failures), we called MS.

After talking to Microsoft, we found that if you only have ONE domain controller per site, the Ifrastructure Master can exist on the same DC as the Global Catalog (without causeing problems). It's only when you have multiple domain controllers in the SAME SITE, that you should split the GC and IM roles.

I hope this helps.. Joseph L. Poandl

Hello Jo,

Thanks for the resolution. This issue has been bothering me for days.

Hi Roland. You can make all 3 DC's global catalogs. This will effectively negate the need for the Infrastructure master role entirely, as all DC's will contain at least a partial reference to all AD objects, and those references will be updated by GC replication.
