I noticed that some machines are getting an updated GAL while some are not, is this because of the cached mode? I tried send and receive address book but that's not working, any ideas.

Are the problem machines running in cached mode? If so, then yes I'd suspect you are right. Then you'd need to look at the OAB settings.

Where would I find OAB settings?
To resolve the problem on some machines I removed the .oab files from C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and then done a send and receive address book and then copied the files back.
This is not a very good solution going round to each machine, why are they not updating by themselves.
Would running this help?
Update-GlobalAddressList -identity "Default Global Address List

I agree that is a long winded way to "fix" the problem.

Look in the EMC at Server Configuration/Client Access/<Server name>/Offline Address Book Distribution/OAB (Default Web Site).

In the properties of that you should find a polling interval. If that is set to 0 it won't update. Set it to something sensible, the default is 480 (8 hours).

Thanks, I was looking for that.
It is set to 480, is 8 hours not too long?
What's strange is that one of the computer's .oab files had not been update since 08/12/2007 and that computer is permanently on.

The downloading of the OAB is fully related to whether you are in cached mode or not. If you are in cached mode it downloads it because the system, say a laptop, might not be connected to a network. If you are connected to a network it just gets it on the fly from the server.

Through the EMC under organization Configuration -- Mailbox

you can set the update schedule of the OAB.

480 is fine.

See if that PC is in cached mode - if it is permanently on it does not need to be in cached mode.

I prefer cached mode as it enables me to restart the server without the thousand phone calls.
Ever since SP1 strange things have been happening. Before GAL would update within 15 min, even users outside the network are complaining about OWA not working, don't know yet if any of this is related. Will test that one tonight.
