Gigital Camera and Firewire 1

I have been trying to connect a JVC GR-DVL 9000 digital camera to my Win XP Pro PC via Firewire. The Camera is supposed to work with XP and firewire but the PC does not see the camera. I have tried the camera on a couple of PC's with XP and Vista witout success. Checked all the usual cables etc for faults.
Any help please.

Are you sure it's a Firewire camera? Is there a setting on the camera for this purpose?

I have a JVC digital video camera and mine works perfect in XP and Vista via firewire. Plugged in and instantly works.

Make sure its plugged in tight and turned on after you plug it in and if it isn't seen by the PC I'd say it should be returned for a new one.

Any drivers that the camera might need? Perhaps you need to run something before it can get picked up. Although unlikely its still possible.

Wahnula also makes a good point. Cameras usually have a settings. Mine for example can be set to be picked up as a removable drive, so I can access the pictures directly, or as a Camera resource for the Software. And also have a setting depending on the connection. Firewire or USB.

Firewire doesn't usually need drivers, in my experience.

vacunita/wahnula are correct, tho... I had to go into the settings on my camera to tell it I wanted to connect.

Before returning the camera, you may want to try it on another PC first (you may have a bad firewire port), and, when all else fails, RTFM ;-)

I have now sorted the problem, I was using the camera on Battery power, it only gives a dv out when mains power is connected.

Ah, thats good to know. Star for that. Never would have guessed that but it does make sense. Thanks a lot for posting what fixed the problem.
