Hi Everyone

I'm replacing the HDD on a PC and seem to recall a programme called GHOST for copying the old HDD contents onto the new one.

Can anyone help with this?

Don't know if it's of help but Norton Systemworks 2002 Professional has it on their program.

not only copy files but the mirror copy of the whole computer, which means you won't need to reinstall the OS and programs you run on that old compuer, pretty neat program, I need to setup a test machine to try it myself though, I would suggest always backup all your "inreplaceable" file first before try that program

Seems to me that the trial version you can download for free, has an *.exe file missing, so people like me cannot use it without paying.

I'll blag it from somewhere.

Norton Ghost 2002 can write a clone copy of your HDDs onto CD-Rs, assuming you have a CD-writer installed. I use this before making major changes to my system. Also makes an excellent system backup and it's good insurance if something goes wrong while making system mods (and it usually does). Just make sure you use decent quality CD-Rs. It is also very easy to revert to a previous incarnation of your system.

Are you British? I am. What other nationality would choose a name like euston!

Hi Euston

I prefer to call myself English, after all I don't hear Scots or Welsh people calling themselves British.

Thanks for your advice, but really want to blag a copy somehow, although looking at my son's HDD, his OS is corrupt and only items worth saving are to be copied over. I've never used the backup facility in WIN98, but I am assuming that you backup portions rather than the whole drive.

By the way, I'm in Kidderminster, Worcesterhire and of course visiting the capital by train means that I arrive in Euston, so the name is very familiar to me.

XXCOPY,
Do an

XXCOPY16 /CLONE

from a DOS boot and it will even snag all the usually busy win files. Nyet problemski.

if we don't reficeri, how we gonna excelsior?

Vox clamtis... :)

Hi JNICKS

Thanx for the info. I have installed XXCOPY onto the new drive and from the blurb, it sounds good. I haven't had to use it yet because I transferred the files from old to new using cut and paste without a problem.

My only hangup about this programme is that it is DOS based and I can't remember all of the commands. For example, if I wanted to transfer MY DOCUMENTS from D:(removable slave drive) to C: (new master drive), what would I type at the C:>

Seagate has a utility for this purpose. You can get it from their web site. Just do a search on seagate hard drives. It works real well. I have even used it on maxtor drives!

I have used Ghost at work cloning Hard drives and it worked flawlessly.

"what other nationality..." eustonian?? <g>
(A bird in the hand greatly interferes with typing.)
