I am using ARCserve's (V 11.0) GFS rotation. I'm not exactly sure of the tape use method. I would like to make sure that a monthly is created on it's own tape, not appended to another that may have sufficient space. I'd also like the same to happen for my weekly tapes. Is this done automatically based on the Rotation Scheme?

I have the append media checkbox checked at this time for the job in question.

I have a 24 tape Quantum M1500 and am using Ultrium 400GB/800GB tapes, and I know that my monthly and weekly will fit on one tape.

Hi,

Modify the Job and select overwrite..
however this would use a seperate tape every day.. meaning..

DAILY,WEEKLY,MONTHlY would have a tape of their own..

So it Shall be Written!
So it Shall be Done!!

Use a GFS rotation and deselect the append media option within GFS.
This should work for you

Thanks for the responses, however I would like to know a bit more about how the GFS option "chooses" tapes. If I have the append checkbox checked, will a Monthly or weekly be placed onto the end of a tape that has incrementals on it if there's adequate space left on the disk? Or, due to the fact that it's a Monthly or Weekly, the rotation is aware enough to use an unused tape for the Monthly and/or Weekly?

No, a Monthly or Weekly job will not be added to a Daily append tape.

You can use the GFS media predection report to see which tapes it will use.
