The user is only having the problem when he tries to open a word document from the intranet. it starts to open the doc, but then stop and says"you cannot close word because there is a dialog box open. Now if he first boots up and try to open a word doc somewhere on the c:\ the word doc will open. If you Ctr+Alt+ Del the apps is not under apps, but the service winword.exe is running. You guys have any clues? Josh McMahon

We have researched it and found that the problem lies somewhere in how we installed outlook, "admin install" Josh McMahon

Problem:
When trying to install SP3 to Office 2000 you get:
Error 1328. Error applying patch to file C:\program files\Microsoft Office\FILE.NAME. It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor.

Cause:
Office was installed from an Administrative install. We have been installing what are called public service packs to our administrative install of office. As per Microsoft we are doing it wrong.

RESOLUTION:
To resolve this problem, do not apply a client update to a workstation that installed Office from a network administrative installation. Instead, update the administrative installation with the administrative version of the update, and then update the network client workstation by using the command line appropriate for the update.

What I have done:
I have fixed our administrative install. It is now Service pack 3

How to use it:
1. To do a new install - Run the setup.exe as normal.
<\\lexapp\Software\pc\office2000\setup.exe>

2. To do an upgrade to SP3 - You can do 3 things.
This may or may not work. You many need to uninstall office and reinstall it form the new admin install.
1. Run setup.exe as normal and click the repair option
2. Run the Update package I have built. <\\sms\software\OfficeSP3\office2000sp3.EXE>
3. Or run the command from à START à RUN and type “msiexec /i \\lexapp\Software\pc\office2000\data1.msi REINSTALL=All REINSTALLMODE=vomus” Josh McMahon
