I am trying to get stock quotes directly into my spreadsheet in Excel 97, can anyone offer any advice on how to do this

In Excel, click on DATA-GET EXTERNAL DATA-RUN WEB QUERY

It should pop up a window with existing (standard queries). There, you should see a queries for getting stock quotes. If not, then create a file (call it stock.iqy (the "iqy" is a standard extension for a web query)) and put the following lines in the file:

WEB
1
["TICKER","Enter your stock symbol for a detailed quote."]

Once you have done that, follow the prompts.

There are then 2 ways in which you can update the quote. Either by clicking on DATA-REFRESH DATA, or by click on DATA-GET EXTERNAL DATA-DATA RANGE PROPERTIES and then selecting the check box which says "Refresh data on file open".
