I want to get experience with Pix firewalls. I was thinking about purcahsing a 501, just because it is about the only affordable one out there. Can this firewall perform all of the same functions as the bigger models? I have heard that it cant provide failover but is there anything else that it cant do? Would this be a good investment for learning the PIX operating system?

HI.
Another limitation is that pix501 like pix506 has only 2 interfaces so cannot have DMZ.
But if you need to have a pix for learning this is the best choice as a pix515 with 3 interfaces will cost too much for that.

the 501 can do virtually everything it's bigger brothers can do except the failover(no ports) and a *true* DMZ, again, no ports. But the rest is the same.
