Ok well I have Finally got to where my new E2K server will accept and migrate files from our 5.5 box.
I am now trying to get my E2K box to receive mail from our external Sendmail box that forwards mail from outside the firewall to our exchange server inside.

Does anyone know the steps to take in doing this so that I can do away with my old 5.5 box.

Try modifying the MX record on your external DNS server to point to your new Ex2K box.

Chris

Well I had tried modifying the internal MX record in the DNS to map the correct address and still no go.

Our 5.5 box was working fine without this mapping and I am currious as to why E2K needs it when 5.5 didn't.

Also I changed the firewall so that info that was headed for the old 5.5 box would now be routed to the Exchange 2000 box but still no go, I am missing something simple and I just can't put my finger on it.
I also updated the Recipient Policy to include the name the names of our Exchange organization....

Any Ideas ????

Every mail server needs an MX record on your external DNS server, not internal. Your external DNS server is usually hosted at your ISP's site. What did you change on your firewall? Did you change the public address or your private internal address?

Ok why would I need to have the MX record updated on the outside, My server on the inside of the Net has a Natted address from the outside, we changed in the firewall wich server this was pointing to, we also went in and set up the virtual servers under SMTP. We have a Sendmail box that sits on the outside of the firewall and then fowards the mail into out Exchange server on the inside..... So the internet side MX record should not have to be change , correct????

Yes, you don't need to change it. I asked because you didn't specify which IP address on the firewall you changed. If you changed the IP on the public side, then the MX record would also need to be updated.

How many SMTP virtual servers do you have setup in Exchange System Manager?

I think my MX record is wrong,,, and I can't find a good example to follow ..

You said above "we also went in and set up the virtual servers under SMTP"

Go into Exchange System Manager (ESM).

Administrative Groups
- Servers
-name of your Exchange2000 Server-
- Protocols
- SMTP
(you should have a "Default Virtual SMTP Server" here)

Let me know,
ChrisP

Yup, got that one with the name in there that our Outside mail server fowards too... By any chance you got MSN messenger, if so mine is GRBorrer@hotmail.com

Are you in control of your external DNS server? If you are, then what operating system is your DNS server running on? Basically all you have to do is add an MX record in your forward lookup zone. In Linux, an example might be...

24.2.3.55 domain.com 10

You need to specify an IP address where the server is located, the domain name, and the priority of that server. The priority of the MX record only matters if you have multiple mail servers. The MX record with the lowest priority will be your main mail server.

NO MSN Messenger. I am very anti-Microsoft. I replaced my Windows and Exchange servers with Linux and Lotus Domino:)

Is there anything in the SMTP Queues? Its right below the SMTP Virtual Server. What happens when someone emails you? Do they get a message returned to them?

No Queues and the mail just sits and waits to be delivered....

Is your Exchange2K box natted to this address on the firewall - 151.164.147.151?

Tell me the IP addresses of the following...

1. public IP your Exchange2K box is natted to on the firewall
2. IP of your external Sendmail box

CP

Were any public IP addresses changed? If not, then the problem is probaly with your Exchange2K box, assuming that the NAT on your firewall was changed correctly to point to your new Ex2K box instead of the old 5.5 server.

Have you tried creating any new mailboxes on the 2K server? If yes, can the new users receive mail.

New User can not recieve email either, I am convinced that I have the MX record setup wrong I just have no way of verifying this....
