Get field value in ASP 1

I have an MS Access database with peoples names in it, but on the website, I want to just show the persons INITIALS, and when authorized people login, show the full names.

My question is how do I grab a specific character from a value of a database field, such as the first character, 7th character, etc to put into a variable or something to use with another script.

I'm pretty sure it can be done, just dont know how...I'm pretty good with ASP, this is just one of the things I dont know lol...
